Reindeer come in a wide range of sizes and colors, from the tiny Svalbard reindeer to the massive Osborn’s caribou. While they’re generally plentiful, certain species and subspecies are declining and considered vulnerable. They stand out among deer because females can grow antlers, though how common this is depends on the subspecies.

They’re also the only deer to be semi-domesticated on a large scale. For Arctic peoples, both wild and domesticated reindeer have been vital for food, clothing, and shelter since prehistoric times, and they continue to be herded and hunted today.
